Bright, Floyd Homer; UMBC Snaps Seven Game Losing Streak in 9-7 Win Against Mount St. Mary’s

Baltimore, Md.—Senior Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va.) and freshman Dmitri Floyd (Dover, Del.) hit a home run each, as UMBC snapped a seven-game losing streak in a 9-7 victory against Mount St. Mary's on Friday. Floyd led the way with three RBI, all coming on his home run.

UMBC improves to 2-7, while the Mountaineers fall to 3-6 on the year.

The Retrievers got the scoring started in the first, as Bright launched a home run to left to give UMBC a 1-0 lead. Mount St. Mary's answered with a run the very next half inning to tie.

UMBC would respond in their half of the second, as Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa.) laced a single to left, scoring Floyd to make it 2-2 after two. The Mount scored a pair in the third, before Floyd gave UMBC the lead back. He smashed his first collegiate home run with two on to give UMBC a 5-3 lead.

The Mountaineers used a UMBC error to spark their offense, tying the game in the fourth. However, the Retrievers pushed in front for good in the inning. Collin Stack (Jamestown, N.Y.) scored after a throwing error went all the way to the left field wall. Bright struck again just two batters later with an RBI single to make it 7-5. Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) added to the lead with a sacrifice fly in the sixth, and Stack added the final blow with an RBI triple to deep right center in the seventh.

Mount St. Mary's would cut into the deficit in the eighth with a home run by Vaughn Parker, but Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Appalachian State) shut the door in the ninth for his second save of the year.

Bright and Beeman each had three hits on the afternoon with Floyd driving in three runs. Freshman Max Goron (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) picked up his first collegiate win, going 2.1 innings of relief.

UMBC continues their home stand against Hofstra tomorrow. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
