Arlington, Va.-- UMBC baseball lost their seventh straight in a 5-2 loss to George Washington on Tuesday. Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va./WT Woodson) and Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) each had an RBI in the loss to lead UMBC.
UMBC falls to 1-7 while George Washington improves to 6-6 on the year with the win.
The Retrievers got the scoring started in the first after Matt Campbell (Chesapeake, Va./Arkansas) led off the game with a walk. Zack DeThomasis (Rensselaer, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC) found his way to second after reaching on a fielder's choice and advancing on a single. He would later score after Bright laced a single through the left side to give UMBC a 1-0 lead after one.
The Colonials would answer back, getting a run in the second and taking the lead in the fourth. UMBC tied it just a half inning later. Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) led off the inning with a single up the middle. He would advance to third after Chris Convers (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) doubled to left field. Beeman would score the very next at bat on a suicide squeeze by Carroll to tie it at 2-2.
However, The Colonials took the lead with a run in the seventh and two in the eighth to hold off UMBC 5-2.
Five different Retrievers recorded hits on the afternoon. Freshman starter Nick Trabacchi (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) went seven strong innings, striking out four in the loss.
UMBC returns to Baltimore for their home opener against Mount St. Mary's on Friday, March 9 at 3 p.m. as part of the UMBC Tournament. The Retrievers welcome the Mount and Hofstra to Baltimore for the three day tournament.
