Columbia, Mo.— UMBC baseball suffered a 7-1 loss at the hands of Missouri on Friday night. The Retrievers left three on base during the contest, that saw three Tigers combine for the no-hitter. Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) scored the lone Retriever run in the eighth.
UMBC falls to 1-4 on the year, while the Tigers improve to 8-3 on the season.
Mizzou got the scoring started in the first, pushing a pair of runs across after the Retrievers went down in order in the top half. The Tigers added to their lead with a leadoff home run in the third to make it 3-0.
The Retrievers would get their first baserunner in the fifth after a leadoff walk by Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro). He would advance to second after a Beeman walk, and a wild pitch moved both into scoring position with one out. However, they would end up stranded after a strikeout and groundout ends the inning.
Mizzou added a pair of runs in the fifth and seventh to take a 7-0 lead into the eighth. UMBC pushed across their lone run after Beeman reached on a wild pitch after a strikeout. He advanced to third on a Christian Torres (Miami, Fla./Miami Senior) walk and Zack DeThomasis (Rensselaer, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC) fielder's choice. Beeman would cross home the very next at bat after Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) grounded out.
However, the Retrievers would go down in order in the ninth, as three Tigers pitchers combined for the no-hitter on Friday night.
UMBC and Mizzou continue the weekend series tomorrow, Saturday, March 3 at 3 p.m. est.
