Annapolis, Md.—Sophomore Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) paced the Retriever offense with a pair of hits, however the Retrievers could not muster a run in a 7-0 loss to Navy on Tuesday afternoon. The Midshipmen put up 13 hits in the win that drops UMBC to 1-3 on the year.
After the Retrievers went down in order, Navy got the scoring in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs on an RBI ground out and single. UMBC would get their first hit of the afternoon in the second on a Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va./WT Woodson) single to lead off the inning. He would get to second on a wild pitch but end up stranded on base.
The Mids would add another pair of runs in the third and the fifth to take a 6-0 lead. After extending the lead to 7-0 heading to the eight, the Retriever bats came alive in the eight. Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) led off the inning with a single up the middle on the first pitch. Stewart picked up his second hit of the afternoon the very next at bat to put a pair on. However, a double play and strikeout end the inning.
Navy would retire the side in order in the ninth to take a 7-0 victory on Tuesday. The Midshipmen had a pair of batters with three hits and four with multiple hits. Tommy Goodridge picked up the win throwing six innings of scoreless ball.
UMBC got a pair of hits from Stewart, and one each from Bright and Beeman.
The Retrievers will continue their road swing with a three-game set at Missouri this weekend. The Tigers and Retrievers kick off the weekend series on Friday, March 2 at 6:30 p.m.
