Cary, N.C. — AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), Zach Bright (Fairfax Station, Va./WT Woodson), and Christian Torres (Miami, Fla./Miami Senior) all hit home runs, but the UMBC baseball team fell to Monmouth (2-4), 17-5, on the last day of the Penn State Tournament down at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C on Sunday.
The loss dropped the Retrievers to 1-2 to begin the season.
The Hawks shot out the gate, scoring two runs in each of the first two innings. UMBC would cut the deficit to one in the fourth when Wright followed up leadoff singles by Joe Milkowski (Lackawanna, N.Y./St. Francis/Niagara County CC) and Collin Stack (Jamestown, N.Y./Monroe CC) with his first homer of the season to left center.
Monmouth would answer back in the bottom half of the inning with three runs of their own to push the score to 7-3. The Hawks would add four more in the sixth, before the Retrievers would be able to respond. Bright and Torres would both hit their first homers of the year as well, as UMBC added two more runs in the seventh to make the score 11-5.
The Hawks would add six more runs over the next two innings, and the game would end like that with the final score of 17-5.
UMBC gets back into action on Tuesday, February 26, as they travel to Annapolis to take on Navy. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 pm.
