Defending America East Champion UMBC Baseball Picked Sixth in Preseason Poll

Boston, Mass.—Defending America East Champion UMBC baseball was picked to finish sixth by the coaches of the conference in the annual preseason poll, announced on Thursday.

UMBC is coming off their first America East title in program history in 2017, making an appearance in their third NCAA Tournament. The Retrievers finished the year at 23-25, 11-9 AE, winning three straight in the America East Tournament to earn the title. In the title game, UMBC needed a walk-off walk to defeat Maine, 2-1 in extra innings.

Defending regular season champions Binghamton were the unanimous choice to finish atop the standings, garnering six of seven first place votes and 36 points. Last year's runners up Maine were second with 29 points and Stony Brook was in third with 28 points and the last first place vote.

Albany (17 pts), and UMass Lowell (16 pts) were just ahead of UMBC (15 pts) in sixth place, followed by Hartford in last place with six points.

The Retrievers will open the season in Cary, N.C. at the Penn State Tournament on February 23 against Penn State. UMBC will also play St. John's and Monmouth at the tournament. The Black and Gold open America East play against Hartford at Alumni Field on March 17-18. This year, the America East Tournament will be held at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Maine with the top six teams advancing to the tournament.
