UMBC Drops Opening Game of Winston-Salem Regional

Winston-Salem, N.C. – The number four seed UMBC baseball team dropped their opening game in the Winston-Salem regional, 11-3, to host and number one seed Wake Forest on Friday night at David F. Couch Ballpark.

Each team retired the other quickly to start the game off. The Demon Deacons would break the game open in their half of the second inning, as they put together a six run inning. The Retrievers wouldn't go down so easily; however, as they would strike back immediately in the top of the third.

After a Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) leadoff double, Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) would take the sixth pitch of his at bat over the left field wall to make the score 6-2. UMBC would strike again in the sixth inning, with bases loaded and no outs when Christian Torres (Miami, Fla./Miami Senior) would drive in a run with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to three runs. Wake Forest would respond in their half of the sixth with four runs to make it 10-3. They would score another run over their last two runs to go up 11-3 and that is how the game would end.

Casali lead the team at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.

The Retrievers will face Maryland tomorrow, June 3 at 2:00 pm in an elimination game at David F. Couch Ballpark.
