West Hartford, Conn.—UMBC baseball fell in the opener, 16-7, before taking game two 7-3 after a comeback in the final inning. Junior Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va./WT Woodson) hit the go-ahead pinch hit single in the seventh to help UMBC split on Friday.

The Retrievers improve to 10-16, 4-4 AE while the Hawks fall to 11-17, 3-5 AE on the year.

Game One:

The Hawks jumped out early with a run in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 lead.

UMBC responded the next half inning with a solo home run from Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) and RBI single from Christian Torres (Miami, Fla./Miami Senior) that put the Retrievers in front 2-1.

Trailing 4-2, UMBC cut the deficit in half with Torres scoring on an RBI single from Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) to make it 4-3. However the Hawks would score 12 runs over the next four innings to take a commanding 16-4 lead into the final inning.

The Retrievers would not go quietly, as they got an RBI walk from Matt Shatto (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township), RBI single from Connor Hax (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara), and Bright sac fly to cut it to 16-7, but the Hawks shut the door taking game one.

Torres led the way in game one with three hits, scoring once and driving in a pair.

Game Two:

The Retrievers and Hawks battled to a scoreless tie through the first three innings, as UMBC starter Matt Chanin (Olney, Md./Sherwood) held the Hawks without a hit. However it would be Hartford who struck first, getting a pair of runs in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead.

UMBC answered the next half inning, getting a big two-run home run from Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) to tie it before Collin Stack (Jamestown, N.Y./Monroe CC) singled home Jamie Switalski to give UMBC the lead 3-2.

The Hawks would tie it in the bottom of the fifth, but the Retrievers stuck last, getting four runs in the seventh, getting the go-ahead run on a Bright single scoring Stack.

Michael Austin (Eldersburg, Md./Bethune-Cookman) would retire the side in the bottom of the inning to give UMBC a 7-3 win in game two. Austin came in to relieve Chanin going 3.1 innings, giving up one run and four hits to earn his second win.
