UMBC Baseball Battles with Gardner-Webb in 5-2 Defeat on Saturday

Boiling Springs, N.C.—UMBC baseball fell, 5-2 in game two of their series with Gardner-Webb on Saturday. The Retrievers mustered just three hits, as they fall to 0-5 on the year.

The Runnin' Bulldogs got on the board first, scoring on a sac fly after a leadoff triple to give Gardner-Webb a 1-0 lead after one.

UMBC would respond the very next half inning after Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) led off with a single. Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) reached on an error the very next at bat, as Dolshun advanced to third on the play. Zack Bright (Fairfax, Station, Va./WT Woodson) would reach on a wild pitch after a strikeout to score Dolshun.

From there, both Matt Chanin (Olney, Md./Sherwood) and GWU pitcher Zach Mosay would keep the bats silent through the middle innings, not giving up anything offensively.

Gardner-Webb would take back the lead with a two-run home run in the fifth, giving them a 3-1 lead.

The Retrievers chipped away at the lead, getting a triple from Colin Stack (Jamestown, N.Y./Monroe CC) followed by an AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) RBI groundout to make it 3-2.

However the Runnin' Bulldogs would score a run in the seventh and eighth to take a 5-2 victory on Saturday.

Stack, Dolshun and Switalski recorded the lone UMBC hits on Saturday, with Stack having the only extra base hit.

Chanin went seven strong, giving up just three earned runs, six hits with three strikeouts. 

The series finale will begin tomorrow, Sunday March 5 at 1 p.m.
