UMBC Places Four on All-Conference First Team; Eight Total Retrievers Earn Honors

Lowell, Mass.—UMBC placed four players on the America East All-Conference First Team, as eight total Retrievers earned honors, the conference announced at the awards banquet on Tuesday at LeLacheur Park. Conrad Wozniak (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods/Frank Phillip), Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville), Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West), and Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) earned first team honors for the Retrievers, who enter the tournament as the four seed with a 28-21, 13-10 AE record.

Wozniak was a unanimous selection for the second year in a row. This year, the senior finished the regular season with a 3.12 ERA in 69.1 innings pitched with a 6-3 record. Lachance earns his first-ever first team selection after hitting .390 with 76 hits and 50 runs scored in 2016, all America East bests. Gatto saw action in both the outfield and first base for UMBC, hitting .367 with four home runs, two of which came this past weekend against Hartford. Dolshun earns first team honors after being placed on the second team last year. This year he has a team best 47 RBIs with 13 home runs, the most in the America East.

The All-Conference Second Team saw a pair of Dawgs in freshman AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) and Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland). Wright was also named to the All-Rookie Team after hitting .288 with 51 hits, ten doubles and three home runs. Switalski was once again Mr. Do- Everything for the Retrievers, spending time at first base, as well as third base and at pitcher. He hit .306 with 40 RBIs and 14 doubles for UMBC.

Joining Wright on the All-Rookie team was Jacob Christian (Nokesville, Va./Patriot). Christian started the season as a mid-week starter, before being moved to the weekend rotation. He had a 4.25 ERA with a 3-1 record in eight starts this year.

Junior Cory Callahan (Sykesville, Md./Good Counsel) represented the Retrievers on the All-Academic Team, as he sports a 3.53 grade-point average while working toward his degree in biology. The right- hander has a 3.02 ERA in six starts on the year.

UMBC will take on the fifth-seeded Albany Great Danes on Wednesday, May 25 at noon. The loser of the game will face the loser of No. 3 Stony Brook and No. 6 Maine at 7 p.m. in an elimination game. The winner will take on No. 1 Binghamton on Thursday at noon.
