Boston, Mass.—UMBC baseball junior Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) and freshman AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) were named America East Player and Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Both Dolshun and Wright had big weeks for the Retrievers, who won three of their four games, including a series win against Hartford.
Dolshun was locked in from the plate, blasting five home runs, with 14 RBIs in a 3-1 week for the Dawgs. He went 9-14 from the plate, including a 2-2 day against James Madison, where he hit two home runs, with five RBIs before leaving the game to take a final exam. The New York native slugged 1.714 with an on base percentage of .706.
Wright had an equally impressive week, hitting .412 going 7-17 from the plate with two doubles, one home run and three RBIs. His solo home run on Sunday helped the Retrievers pull away from Hartford to earn the series win.
The Retrievers head to Lowell, Mass. for the America East Tournament as the four seed. UMBC will take on the fifth seeded Albany Great Danes on Wednesday, May 25 at noon. The loser of the game will face the loser of No. 3 Stony Brook and No. 6 Maine at 7 p.m. in an elimination game. The winner will take on No. 1 Binghamton on Thursday at noon.
