Retriever Bats Come Alive in 13-4 Win against Hartford on Saturday

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball pounded out 14 hits in a 13-4 win against the Hawks on Saturday. The Retrievers win the series behind big batting and pitching performances, and will be the four seed in the upcoming America East Tournament next week at 28-21, 13-10 AE on the year.

Hartford struck first, scoring off an error and passed ball, but the Retrievers quickly responded with Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) belting his third home run of the series to left to tie it. AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) drove in Gatto on a fielder's choice in the third to give the Retrievers a 2-1 lead, a lead they never lost.

The Dawgs continued their trend of hitting big home runs in recent games, as Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) hit his 12th home run of the year, this one a two run shot to left center in the fifth. A couple batters later, Wright blasted his third of the year down the left field line to make it 5-1 UMBC.

The Hawks added a pair in the sixth to cut into the lead, but a six run sixth inning put UMBC ahead for good. Dolshun would add another home run to straight away center in the seventh, as UMBC held Hartford to four hits in a 13-4 win.

Jacob Christian got the win for the Retrievers, throwing five innings with six strikeouts to earn his third win of the year.

UMBC will be the four seed in the America East Tournament, and will face the five seeded Albany Great Danes on Wednesday, May 25 at noon to kick off the tournament in Lowell.
