UMBC Baseball Continues Home Stand Against Delaware State on Friday

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball returns to the diamond after a couple days off against the Hornets on Friday night at Alumni Field. The Retrievers most recently defeated Georgetown on Tuesday night, 9-4 to win their fifth in a row. UMBC sits at 24-20, 11-9 AE on the year with just over a week left in the regular season.

Scouting the Retrievers (24-20):

-UMBC comes into the Friday matchup with the Hornets after knocking off Georgetown 9-4 on Tuesday at Alumni Field. Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) paced the Retrievers going 2-2 with five RBIs, including a three run double to help the Retrievers pull in front for good.

-Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) leads the team offensively, hitting .395, having played in every game. He leads the team in hits (68), doubles (13), as well as swiping 25 bases in 29 tries. Classmate Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) is second on the team with a .340 average, while junior Hunter Dolshun is hitting .338 with a team best eight home runs.

-On the mound, Conrad Wozniak (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods/Frank Phillip) leads the rotation with a 3.13 ERA in 11 starts this season. Wozniak has a 6-3 record in 63.1 innings pitched with a team best 50 strikeouts. Junior Cory Callahan (Sykesville, Md./Good Counsel) has made five starts since entering the rotation, throwing 46.1 innings of work with 24 strikeouts.

Scouting the Hornets (13-34):

-Delaware State comes to Baltimore at 13-34, having most recently taking two of three from UMES this past weekend. The Hornets won game one 4-1, before falling in game two 12-7. DSU took the series finale 7-1, ending the MEAC portion of the schedule at 13-10 overall.

-Todd Henry leads the Hornet offense in almost every statistical category, including a .329 batting average. Henry has amassed 48 hits with six doubles and 18 RBIs while scoring 28 runs. Austin Bentley has driven in a team best 31 runs with 42 hits for a .271 average.

-The Hornet pitching staff has a collective ERA of 5.77, with opponents batting .289 against them. Lane DeLeon leads the starting rotation with a 4.26 ERA in 11 starts on the mound. He has a 2-5 record with one complete game in 63.1 innings pitched. Sean McGrath leads the team with a 4-5 record in 12 starts and a 5.24 ERA.

All-Time Series:

-UMBC leads the all-time series with Delaware State, 16-10, including a 4-1 record in games played in Baltimore since 1994.

-The most recent meeting between the two sides ended with a 17-5 UMBC win in 2014.

Records Watch:

-Senior Kevin Lachance and junior Andrew Casali are fast approaching the top of the record books in several categories. Lachance is just 17 hits away from the program record for a career. He is also five stolen bases away from breaking his own single season record he set last year.

-Casali is just one triple shy of tying the single season record, while also being one sacrifice away from the all-time lead.
