Baltimore, Md.— UMBC baseball picked up a huge 9-4 victory, avenging a pair of losses to the Hoyas earlier in the year. Mitchell Carroll led the Retrievers with five RBIs, as UMBC moves to 24-20 on the year.
The Retrievers broke through on the Hoyas getting a pair of runs in the second. After a lead-off single from Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) and a pair of walks, Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) earned an RBI walk to give UMBC a 1-0 lead. The very next pitch, Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) laid down a beautiful suicide squeeze to score AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) making it 2-0 early.
Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) would lead off the third with a single to left, followed by a Switalski double off the top of the fence to put runners on second and third for Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan). Casali drove in Dolshun on an RBI ground out to give UMBC a 3-0 lead.
Georgetown responded, taking the lead with four runs over the next three innings off the Retrievers.
UMBC would not go away quietly. The Retrievers would load the bases in the sixth, setting up Carroll. He would lace a double to deep right center field, clearing the bases and giving UMBC a 6-4 lead. Dolshun increased the lead with a single to right scoring Carroll to make it 7-4. Switalski added some insurance with an RBI single to push the Retriever advantage to 8-4.
Carroll would add another RBI with a sacrifice fly to right to score Wright, adding an insurance run in the seventh to make it 9-4, a lead they would not relinquish.
The Retrievers quieted the Hoyas in the ninth to earn a big 9-4 win on Tuesday night. Carroll led the Retrievers going 2-2 with five RBI in the win.
The Retrievers will be back in action tomorrow, May 11 with a home meeting with UMES starting at 6 p.m.
