UMBC Baseball Kicks Off End of Season Home Stand with Georgetown and UMES This Week

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball comes into the mid-week with the Hoyas and Hawks riding a four game win streak. The Retrievers are 23-20, 11-9 AE after a sweep of UMass Lowell this past weekend. The Retrievers got a big weekend from freshman AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) and junior Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) in the series.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-UMBC comes into the two games this week on a four game win streak, after sweeping UMass Lowell this weekend. Andrew Casali hit over .400 this weekend, including going 2.1 innings on the mound collecting two saves.

-Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) leads the team offensively, hitting .402, having played in every game. He leads the team in hits (63), doubles (13), as well as swiping 25 bases in 29 tries. Classmate Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) is second on the team with a .340 average, while junior Hunter Dolshun is hitting .326 with a team best eight home runs.

-On the mound, Conrad Wozniak (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods/Frank Phillip) leads the rotation with a 3.13 ERA in 11 starts this season. Wozniak has a 6-3 record in 63.1 innings pitched with a team best 50 strikeouts. Junior Cory Callahan (Sykesville, Md./Good Counsel) has made five starts since entering the rotation, throwing 46.1 innings of work with 24 strikeouts.

Scouting the Hoyas:

-Georgetown sits at 24-26, 7-8 in the BIG EAST, and are coming off a big 3-2 win against No. 23 Creighton on Sunday. The Hoyas rallied late for the upset victory, getting three RBIs from Beau Hall.

-Michael DeRenzi leads the team with a .333 average, leading the squad with 62 hits, seven doubles, five triples and three home runs. Joseph Bialkowski paces the Hoya offense with 29 RBIs and a .267 average,

-Simon Matthews leads the Hoya pitching staff with a 2.33 ERA, as the Hoyas have a collective ERA of 4.36 ERA, with opponents batting .270 against them. Kevin Superko will take the hill for Georgetown on Tuesday, sporting a 6.65 ERA in nine starts and a 0-4 record with 24 strikeouts.

Scouting the Hawks:

-UMES heads to Baltimore with a 16-32 record, having dropped two of three to MEAC foe Delaware State this weekend. The Hawks stole game one on Sunday after dropping 4-1 and 7-1 decisions in the other two games.

-Mike Escanilla leads the Hawk offense, batting .316 on the year with 56 hits and a team best ten doubles and 18 stolen bases. Connor Breslin is batting .280, while Jessey Valdez leads the team with 29 RBIs.

-The Hawks pitching staff has a collective ERA of 7.46, while opponents are batting .313 against them. Chris Melrath leads the staff with a 5.04 ERA having made 15 appearances and eight starts for the Hawks. Melrath has thrown 60.2 innings giving up 34 earned runs with 28 strikeouts.

All-Time Series:

-UMBC and Georgetown have met 49 times prior to Tuesday, with the Retrievers holding a 31-18 advantage. However the Hoyas have had the upper hand in 2016, taking a 6-5 (F/10) and 1-0 decisions earlier this year.

-The Retrievers and Hawks will be meeting for the 14th time on Wednesday, with the Retrievers winning all of the previous 13 meetings.

-UMBC will close out the week with a Friday matchup with Delaware State at 6 p.m. at Alumni Field.
