Retriever Baseball Travels to George Mason on Tuesday

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball continues their seven game road swing at George Mason on Tuesday. The Retrievers are coming off a 6-3 extra inning win against Stony Brook on Sunday, which saw UMBC use back-to-back triples to pull in front of the Seawolves. The win improves UMBC to 20-20, 8-9 AE on the year.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-UMBC comes into the mid-week meeting with George Mason at 20-20, 8-9 AE after going 2-2 last week with wins against Coppin State and Stony Brook. The Retrievers needed extra innings to take down the Seawolves on Sunday, getting big performances from freshman AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) and junior Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) in the win.

-Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) leads the team offensively, hitting .401, having played in every game. He leads the team in hits (63), doubles (11), as well as swiping 25 bases in 29 tries. Classmate Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) is second on the team with a .352 average, while junior Hunter Dolshun is hitting .336 with a team best seven home runs.

-On the mound, Conrad Wozniak (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods/Frank Phillip) leads the rotation with a 3.24 ERA in ten starts this season. Wozniak has a 5-3 record in 58.1 innings pitched with a team best 47 strikeouts. Junior Cory Callahan (Sykesville, Md./Good Counsel) has made four starts since entering the rotation, throwing 42.1 innings of work with 21 strikeouts.

Scouting the Patriots:

-George Mason enters the contest at 15-29, 4-11 A10 on the year, having most recently won their A-10 series with Richmond this past weekend. The Patriots won game one 3-2, before splitting the double-header with a 1-0 loss and a 1-0 win.

-The Patriots are led by Greg Popatak, who has played in 40 of 44 games this season. Popatak is hitting .276 with 35 hits, five doubles, two triples and a pair of home runs. Kent Blackstone leads the team with nine doubles, six triples, and 28 RBI while hitting .241 on the year.

-On the mound, the Patriots have a collective ERA of 6.43, with opponents hitting .290 against them. Tuesday the Patriots will start LHP Tyler Kardas who is 2-1 in six starts with a 7.48 ERA. He has given up 18 earned runs with 18 strikeouts.

-With his most recent win against Stony Brook, head coach Bob Mumma is just one win away from career win number 100. The Retriever skipper is in his fifth year at the helm of UMBC, and had a 79-121 record coming into 2016.

All-Time Series:

-The Patriots lead the all-time series, 43-15, including a 13-3 record in game played in Fairfax. However the Retrievers have had the upper hand recently, winning the last two contests.

-The Retrievers will conclude their road schedule with a three game series at UMass Lowell  on Saturday and Sunday, May 7-8.
