UMBC Baseball Concludes Road Swing at Navy on Tuesday

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball finishes their eight game road swing at Navy on Tuesday in Annapolis. The Retrievers are 3-4 on their current trip, including a 1-2 weekend at Maine this past weekend. The Retrievers dropped the bookends of the series to fall to 16-16, 6-5 AE on the year.

Scouting the Retrievers (16-16, 6-5 AE):

-UMBC comes into the mid-week contest after losing two of three to Maine this past weekend. Junior Connor Hax (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara) blasted the game winning three run home run in game two of the series, giving UMBC a 3-1 win on Saturday.

-Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) leads the team offensively, hitting .402, having played in every game. He leads the team in hits (51), and home runs (5) as well as swiping 19 bases in 22 tries. Classmate Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) is second on the team with a .362 average, while junior Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) is batting .322 with seven doubles and a team best four triples.

-On the mound, Conrad Wozniak (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods/Frank Phillip) leads the rotation with a 2.98 ERA in eight starts this season. Wozniak has a 5-2 record in 48.1 innings pitched with a team best 40 strikeouts. Junior Cory Callahan (Sykesville, Md./Good Counsel) has made two starts in a team leading 14 appearances. He has thrown 33.1 innings of work with 19 strikeouts.

Scouting the Midshipmen (29-10-1, 8-4 Patriot):

-The Midshipmen come into the contest having won three of their last four in a Patriot League series against Lafayette this past weekend. Navy split the opening double-header, before sweeping the Leopards in the final two games on Sunday.

-Adrian Chinnery and Robert Currie lead the Navy offense with averages of .385 and .379 respectively. Chinnery has35 hits, belting two home runs with 15 RBI in 29 games. Currie has a team best 53 hits with ten doubles, 18 RBI and a team leading ten stolen bases.

-On the hill, the Mids have a combined ERA of 2.76, giving up just 132 runs through 40 games. Tuesday's starter, Collin Brady is 3-0 with a 4.38 ERA in five starts in 2016. He has 24.2 innings, giving up just 12 earned runs with 19 strikeouts. Sam Sorenson leads the bullpen with five saves and a 1.59 ERA in 15 appearances.

-UMBC leads the all-time series, 24-19, including wins in three of the last four contests. All time in game played in Annapolis; Navy leads 9-8 dating back to 1993.

Earlier This Year:

-UMBC and Navy went down to the wire back on March 23, with the Retrievers winning in walk-off fashion in the ninth. The Mids took the lead early, and would tie the game in the top of the ninth. UMBC loaded the bases on a pair of singles and walk, setting up Anthony Gatto. Gatto ripped a single back up the middle to score AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), giving UMBC a 5-4 win.
