UMBC Baseball Continues Their Road Swing at Maine This Weekend

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball looks to continue their winning ways with a weekend America East series at Maine. The Retriever fended off the Towson Tigers on Wednesday, taking a 4-3 victory thanks to stout pitching out of the bullpen. The win moved the Retrievers to 15-14, 5-3 AE on the year.

Scouting the Retrievers (15-14, 5-3 AE):

-UMBC returns to America East play with a three game set at Maine this weekend. The Retrievers come in winners of their last two, including a 4-3 win at Towson on Wednesday. UMBC got a pair of RBI from Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) in the win. Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) picked up his first career save, while smacking two singles on Wednesday.

-Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) leads the team offensively, hitting .409, having played in every game. He leads the team in hits (47), and home runs (4) as well as swiping 19 bases in 22 tries and is 35th in the nation in batting average. Classmate Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) is second on the team with a .340 average, while sophomore Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) is hitting .310 with a team best 27 RBI.

-On the mound, Conrad Wozniak (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods/Frank Phillip) leads the rotation with a 3.27 ERA in seven starts this season. Wozniak has a 4-2 record in 41.1 innings pitched with a team best 31 strikeouts. Junior Cory Callahan(Sykesville, Md./Good Counsel) and senior Jonny Dierks (Easton, Md./Independence/Fort Scott CC) lead the bullpen with 13 and 12 appearances each. Dierks is 3-1 with two saves, while Callahan has a 2.30 ERA in 27.1 innings pitched.

Scouting the Black Bears (8-22, 0-5 AE):

-The Black Bears sit at 8-22, 0-5 AE on the year, winners of their last three. Most recently, Maine knocked off Thomas College (ME) on Wednesday in Orono. The Black Bears took a 4-1 lead after three innings and never looked back in the win.

-Maine is led by Danny Casals and Colin Ridley who are both hitting over .300 on the year. Casals is batting .336, leading the team in hits (38) and stolen bases (10). Ridley is hitting .310 with 26 hits and a team best four home runs and 20 RBI.

-On the mound, the Maine pitching staff has a collective ERA of 5.04, averaging eight strikeouts per game. Logan Fullmer leads the staff, making ten appearances, starting three games. He carries a 1-1 record with three saves and one complete game. His 1.19 ERA is tops on the team, giving up just four earned runs with 43 strikeouts in 30.1 innings pitched.

-Maine leads the all-time series, 40-10, including a 39-10 record in America East play. UMBC has had the advantage recently, winning three of the four meetings, including a 9-5 win in the first round of the America East Tournament last May.
