UMBC Baseball Travels up the Beltway for a Mid-Week Clash with Towson on Wednesday

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball will make the short trek up 695 to take on Towson on Wednesday afternoon. The Retrievers are coming off a 2-1 series loss to Albany this past weekend, with UMBC taking the final game 5-1 behind another strong start by Conrad Wozniak (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods/Frank Phillip). UMBC sits at 14-14, 5-3 AE on the year.

Scouting the Retrievers (14-14, 5-3 AE):

-UMBC heads up the beltway having lost three of their last four, with the lone win coming in the series finale at Albany this past Sunday. Wozniak had another masterful performance, picking up his third straight complete game victory in a 5-1 win on Sunday. The Texas native went seven innings, giving up just five hits and one run.

-Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) leads the team offensively, hitting .414, having played in every game. He leads the team in hits (46), and home runs (4) as well as swiping 19 bases in 22 tries and is 25th in the nation in batting average. Classmate Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) is second on the team with a .348 average, while sophomore Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) is hitting .323 with a team best 27 RBI.

-On the mound, Conrad Wozniak (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods/Frank Phillip) leads the rotation with a 3.27 ERA in seven starts this season. Wozniak has a 4-2 record in 41.1 innings pitched with a team best 31 strikeouts. Junior Cory Callahan(Sykesville, Md./Good Counsel) and senior Jonny Dierks (Easton, Md./Independence/Fort Scott CC) lead the bullpen with 12 and 11 appearances each. Dierks is 3-1 with two saves, while Callahan has a 2.39 ERA in 26.1 innings pitched.

Scouting the Tigers (14-18, 5-1 CAA):

-Towson will face off with George Washington on Tuesday before taking on the Retrievers on Wednesday. The Tigers are coming off a three game sweep of CAA foe James Madison this past weekend, with all three games being decided by four runs or less.

-Brady Policelli and Richie Palacios led the Tiger offense hitting .387 and .341 respectively. Policelli has 46 hits, scoring 30 times while leading the team with 25 RBI and four home runs. Palacios leads Towson with 47 hits, 31 runs scored, and a team best 20 stolen bases.

-The Tigers have a team ERA of 4.83, with their rotation being led by Kevin Ross. Ross has made eight starts with a 2-3 record and a 4.21 ERA. He has thrown the most innings of any pitcher with 36.1 innings pitched. Lee Lawler has made 11 appearances out of the bullpen, recording three saves and 2-1 record with a 3.38 ERA.

All-Time Series:

-Towson leads the series 47-39-1, but the Retrievers have won the last four meeting between the two.

-UMBC has won just two of the last 13 games played in Towson, with both of those wins coming in the last two years.

Earlier This Year:

-The Retrievers took the lead with a run in each of the first two innings en route to a 12-3 victory back in early March. Towson would answer with a run in the third, but UMBC put up three runs in the fourth, and five in the seventh to seal the victory.

-Lachance led the UMBC offense going 5-6 from the plate with a double and three RBI. Starter Jacob Christian (Nokesville, Va./Patriot) went 5.2 innings to earn his first collegiate victory, giving up five hits and three runs.

-The Retrievers will head to Maine for a weekend set with the Black Bears. The two will play a double header on Saturday, April 16 starting at 1 p.m., with the series finale on Sunday, April 17 also at 1 p.m.
