UMBC Baseball Hosts Pair of Mid-Week Games Against Local Rivals Towson and Coppin State

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball will open the home schedule against Towson and Coppin State on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Retrievers are coming off a 1-2 weekend at James Madison, and sit at 2-9 on the year. Both games will have live stats on umbcretrievers.com.

What: UMBC Retrievers (2-9) vs. Coppin State Eagles (1-9)

When: Wednesday, March 9 – 3:00 p.m.

Scouting the Retrievers:

The Retrievers come into the weekend matchup at 2-9 overall, and went 1-2 this past weekend at James Madison. Senior Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) had a huge weekend, hitting .471 with five runs scored and five RBI in the weekend set.

Lachance leads the team with a .409 batting average and has the most hits (18), RBI (8), home runs (2) and stolen bases (8) on the team. Classmate Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) is hitting .400 with 16 hits and three RBI. As a unit, the team is hitting .284 with 19 stolen bases and six home runs.

On the mound, Riley Stephenson (Meridian, Idaho/Boonsboro) is leading the starters with a 3.63 ERA in 17.1 innings pitched. Stephenson has struck out ten, while only walking one. Senior Conrad Wozniak (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods/Frank Phillip) is the staff leader with 14 strikeouts.

Scouting the Tigers:

Towson enters the mid-week meeting at 2-7 overall, winners of their last two. The Tigers most recently knocked off Harvard and Richmond at the Wake Forest Invitational by scores of 6-5 and 3-2 respectively.

Brady Policelli leads the Tigers offensively, hitting .417 with a team best ten hits and two stolen bases. A.J. Gallo is the other big hitter for Towson, batting .323 with ten hits and a team high six RBI. As a team, Towson is batting .257, while opponents are batting .354 against them.

Matt Golczewski leads the pitching staff, having thrown the most innings thus far. Golczewski has a 4.26 ERA in three starts, with team best eight strikeouts. He has given up 12 runs, six earned, and has walked six in the early going.

Scouting the Eagles:

Coppin State sits at 1-9 on the year, and have lost their last eight contests. Their lone win came back on February 20 in a 10-4 win against NYIT. Since then the Eagles have lost eight straight, including 15-0 loss to Hofstra on Sunday.

The Eagles have a pair of batters hitting over .300 in John Kraft (.348) and Bryant Miranda (.333). Kraft is the team leader in RBI (5) and home runs (1). Miranda is tied for the team lead in hits with ten, and has one double and three RBI this year.

Devin Sutorius leads the pitchers with ten strikeouts, and 1-1 record in two starts. Myles Taylor has the best ERA on the staff, at 7.71, giving up four runs, all earned.

All-Time Series:

The Tigers hold a 47-38-1 all-time record over the Retrievers; however the Retrievers swept the season series last year by scores of 12-0 and 16-5.

UMBC has a 44-1 stranglehold on the series, including a 9-6 win at Alumni Field last year against the Eagles.
