UMBC Baseball Heads to Atlanta for a Weekend Set with Georgia Tech

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball looks to end their three game losing skid against the Yellow Jackets this weekend. UMBC is coming off a 1-3 weekend which saw the team win their opener 5-4 against VMI, before dropping contests against VMI (9-3), Wake Forest (10-8), and Georgetown (6-5 F/10). Scouting the Retrievers (1-3):

UMBC is coming off a 1-3 weekend down at Wake Forest last weekend. The Retrievers won the opener, 5-4 against VMI in game one of a double-header. Senior Conrad Wozniak (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods/Frank Phillip) went six innings, giving up three earned while striking out five in the win.

Classmate Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) is leading the Retriever offense early, hitting .438 with seven hits and one home run. Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) has picked up where he left off a year ago, hitting .357 with two RBI through four games.

Ten different pitchers saw action this past weekend, with Riley Stephenson (Meridian, Idaho/Boonsboro) having the best start in those four contests. Stephenson threw 5.1 innings, giving up just two runs and four hits in a no decision. Senior Jonny Dierks (Easton, Md./Independence/Fort Scott) leads the team with six strikeouts in two appearances.

Scouting the Yellow Jackets (4-0):

Georgia Tech is coming into the weekend after a grueling 6-5 win against Georgia Southern on Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets fended off the Eagles after a 16 inning marathon. The Yellow Jackets trailed heading to the sixth, but rallied to force extras, getting three in the top of 16th for the win.

Connor Justus is leading the squad, hitting .444 in the early going. He is 8-18 from the dish with a double and two runs batted in. Matt Gonzalez is leading the team in RBI (8), doubles (3) and home runs (1) while hitting .350.

On the bump, eight pitchers have made an appearance in the early going having not given up an earned run. Brandon Gold has been the ace thus far, striking out eight while only giving up two hits in his only outing this year.
