Retrievers Hang Tough; Fall 10-8 to Wake Forest on Saturday

Winston-Salem, N.C.—UMBC baseball suffered a 10-8 loss at the hands of the Demon Deacons on Saturday. UMBC got a 3-5 day from senior Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) as the Retrievers fall to 1-2 early in the year.

The Retrievers got the scoring started with four runs in the top half of the first inning. Lachance got the Retriever offense going with a lead-off home run to left. Just a few batters later, Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) smacked a two run single, plating Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) and Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill). Casali would then touch home after a sac fly from Connor Hax (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara).

Wake Forest then responded, scoring five runs over two innings to take a 6-4 lead.

UMBC would cut that deficit to just one after a Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) RBI groundout scored Naumann. The Demon Deacons hit right back, getting back to back RBI singles, scoring two runs to increase the lead to 7-5 after five.

Dolshun and Switalski would knock in a pair of runs in the seventh to tie the game, allowing Lachance and Naumann to cross home. However the Demon Deacons would hit a two run home run in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good. Lachance would reach on a fielders' choice that let A.J. Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) score. That would be all the Retrievers got, falling 10-8 on Saturday.

Lachance went 3-5 from the dish with a double and home run, knocking in two runs. Dolshun went 3-5 from the plate, scoring a run and hitting one in.

The Retrievers will close out the opening weekend trip with a 10 a.m. matchup with Georgetown from Couch Ballpark.
