UMBC Baseball Closes Out 2015 Regular Season with Three Game Set Against Hartford

Baltimore, Md.— UMBC baseball comes into the series with Hartford at 31-16, 13-8 AE on the year, and are winners of their last 13 games. The series with the Hawks will close out the regular season, as both teams are fighting for playoff seeding.

Scouting the Retrievers (31-16, 13-8 AE):

The Retrievers are 31-16, 13-8 AE on the year, their best season in past ten years. UMBC comes into the weekend after defeating Georgetown, 4-1 on Tuesday at Alumni Field. The team achieved 30 wins for the first time since 2002, and will make their first appearance in the America East Tournament since 2008.    

Junior outfielder Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) leads the squad, hitting .352 on the year, and has a team-high 58 hits on the year. Naumann has smacked a one home run, while driving in 31 and swiping nine bases. Senior 2B Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) is second on the team with a .313 average, 56 hits and 32 RBI. Corbi tied the single season sacrifices mark (13) with a sac bunt against Georgetown.  

UMBC will throw two newcomers this weekend who have been at the cornerstone of the staff. Junior Conrad Wozniak (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods/Frank Phillip) has been stellar for the Retrievers this year on the hill. The right-hander has a 1.68 ERA in 59.0 IP.  Wozniak has struck out 48 batters, while giving up just 11 earned runs.  Freshman righty Matt Chanin (Olney, Md./Sherwood) has been equally as impressive, hurling to a 1.89 ERA over nine starts, going 5-1 in those games.

Scouting the Hawks (20-28, 8-11 America East):

Hartford is 20-238 on the year, and come into the weekend after a split of their mid-week games this week.  The Hawks lost to Central Connecticut State 8-5 on Tuesday, before defeating the Bryant Bulldogs 9-0 on Wednesday.  

The Hawks are led by David MacKinnon and Chris DelDebbio. MacKinnon leads the team with a .353 average. He has 61 hits, 13 of which are doubles and one home run. DelDebbio is second on the squad with a .288 average, and leads the Hawks with a .471 slugging percentage.

Hartford will throw Kyle Gauthier, Sam McKay, and Brian Murphy this weekend. Gauthier comes in with a 3-6 record and 4.07 ERA, while McKay is also 3-6 with a 4.52 ERA and three complete games. Brian Murphy is 0-4 on the year, tossing a 4.55 ERA in 11 starts.

All-Time Series:

UMBC and Hartford are tied in the all-time series at 24-24, with Hartford leading 24-22 in America East contests. The Hawks took the first series of the year 2-1 back in March. The Retrievers won the first game 6-1 behind a masterful complete game by Joe Vanderplas (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax/Tennessee). Hartford however won the series with wins in game two (5-2) and three (6-4).

Up Next:

The Retrievers will head to Lowell, Mass. and LeLacheur Park for the 2015 America East Tournament. This will be the first time the Retrievers will make an appearance in the tournament since 2008. Their opponent and seed will be determined by the final games of the season this weekend. UMBC needs just one win or a loss by Maine to clinch the two seed.
