Danbury, Mass.-- UMBC freshman Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) picked up another award this week, being named ECAC Division I South Rookie of the Week. Switalski earned the honor after his stellar performance last week for the Retrievers, helping the team improve to 31-16 and improving their win streak to 13 games.
Jamie went 7-9 from the dish hitting an impressive .778 average in three games. He finished the weekend with a .846 on base percentage and a slugging percentage of 1.222. Those marks were the best among all freshman in the America East last week. Switalski started the weekend with a 3-for-4 performance in game one on Saturday, collectinghitting one double and his third one home run of the season. He drove in five runs while scoring four himself in the 17-1 rout. The freshman Jamie ended the weekend with a 4-for-4 performance, scoring a run in a 6-5 comeback win in the playoff clinching series finale. to earn a spot in the upcoming America East Playoffs.
The Retrievers made history this weekend, recording 30 wins for the first time since 2002. UMBC
also earned a slot for the first time since 2008 in the America East Playoffs. The pitching staff recorded the most strikeouts in a single season in program history (320), and Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) became the all-time leader in career stolen bases with 50.
UMBC will close out the regular season with a three game series against Hartford on Friday and Saturday. Friday's double header will begin at noon, with Saturday's single game also starting at noon. Saturday will also serve as Senior Day, with ceremonies beginning prior to first pitch.
