UMBC Baseball on Seven Game Win Streak; Hosts Towson and UMES in Mid-Week Action

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC has a pair of mid-week contests this week, hosting Towson and UMES at Alumni Field on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Retrievers are 25-16, 10-8 AE on the year, their best season since 2008.

Scouting the Retrievers (25-16, 10-8 AE):

UMBC went 5-0 this past week, grabbing wins against George Mason, UMES, and Binghamton (3). The Retrievers are now 25-16, 10-8 AE heading into the mid-week matchups.  

Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) leads the squad hitting .340 on the year, and has a team high 50 hits on the year. Naumann has smacked a one home run, while driving in 26 and swiping eight bases. Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) is second on the team with a  .310 mark. Casali has a pair of home runs and 32 RBI, after his strong showing this past weekend against Binghamton.  

Conrad Wozniak (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods/Frank Phillip) has been stellar for the Retrievers this year on the hill. Wozniak has a 1.53 ERA in 53.0 IP. Conrad has struck out 44 batters, while giving up just nine earned runs. Rookie Matt Chanin (Olney, Md./Sherwood) has been equally as impressive, hurling a 2.18 ERA over nine appearances, going 4-1 in those games.

Scouting the Tigers (15-31-2, 8-13 CAA):

Towson is 15-31-2 on the year, and come into the game on Tuesday having won three of their last four games. They most recently took the series against Northeastern this weekend.

The Tigers are led offensively by Chris Henze and A.J. Gallo. Henze leads the squad with a .346 batting average. Chris is also the team leader in slugging percentage with a .541 average and RBI with 41. Gallo is second on the team with a .339 average and is second in triples with 2.

Kevin Ross leads the staff with 63.2 innings pitched. His 5.37 ERA and 11 starts are tops on the team. Lee Lawler leads the Tigers with four wins and 38 strikeouts in 54.2 innings pitched.  

All-Time Series:

Towson leads the all-time series 47-37-1 in 81 all-time matchups. The two sides met back on March 18, where the Retrievers won 12-0 in Towson.

Scouting the Hawks (16-30, 14-10 MEAC):

UMES comes into the contest at 16-30 on the year, and are coming off a series loss against Delaware State this past weekend.  The Hawks are just 7-16 away from the Eastern Shore this year.  

Mike Escanilla leads the team with a .362 average and team high 51 hits. Justin Dattilo is right behind Escanilla with a .300 batting average. Dattilo is second on the team with 21 RBI and leads the Hawks with 12 doubles.

Jesse Stinnett is the ace of the pitching staff, hurling a 2.80 ERA in 12 starts. Stinnett is 6-5 over those starts, throwing 83.2 innings with 70 strike outs.

All-Time Series:

The Retrievers hold a stout 12-0 lead in the all-time series. UMBC has won every matchup since the two started playing in 1979, including an 8-0 win last Wednesday on the Eastern Shore.

Up Next:

The Retrievers will host Albany in an important America East series this weekend. The Retrievers and Great Danes will play two on Saturday, May 9 starting at noon, with the series finale on Sunday, May 10 at noon. UMBC is currently sitting in second place in the America East standings with just six games to play.
