Vestal, N.Y.—The UMBC baseball team continued their winning ways by defeating the Bearcats 9-7 on Sunday. The Retrievers improve to 25-16, 10-8 AE on the year.
The Retrievers jumped out to a 6-0 lead early on the Bearcats. Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) doubled home Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) to put the Retrievers on the board early in the third. UMBC got another run the very next inning off a Jake Barnes (Annandale, Va./Annandale) single, which allowed Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) to score after a throwing error.
UMBC put up a four spot in the fifth, starting with a Naumann fielder's choice which allowed Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) to cross the plate. Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) followed that up with a single up the middle to score Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley). Barnes hit a sac fly a few batters later to let Naumann cross the plate. Carroll got the final RBI of the inning off a double to plate Casali.
The Bearcats finally got on the board in the seventh, putting up five runs to cut the Retriever lead to 7-5. UMBC and Binghamton would each score in the eighth, with the Bearcats getting a pair of runs to make it a one run game heading to the ninth.
In the final inning, UMBC got a run off a bases loaded walk to give them a 9-7 win.
Dolshun, Casali and Carroll each had three hits in the game, as seven different Retrievers recorded RBI. Connor Hax (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara) recorded his first win of the season going 2.2 innings of relief.
UMBC will take their seven game win streak back to Baltimore for mid-week matchups with Towson (Tuesday May 5) and UMES (Wednesday, May 6).
