UMBC Baseball Starts Five Game Road Trip at George Mason and UMES This Week

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC has a pair of mid-week contests this week, traveling to George Mason and UMES on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Retrievers most recently took two of three from Maine to reach 20 wins for the first time since 2008.

Scouting the Retrievers (20-16, 7-8 AE):

UMBC went 4-1 this past week, grabbing wins against Navy, Coppin State and Maine. The Retrievers are now 20-16, 7-8 AE heading into the mid-week matchups.   

Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) leads the squad hitting .331 on the year, going 43-130 from the dish. Naumann has smacked a one home run, while driving in 23 and swiping six bases. Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) is just under the .300 mark at .299. Casali has a pair of home runs and 26 RBI, after his strong showing this past weekend against Maine.  

Conrad Wozniak (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods/Frank Phillip) has been stellar for the Retrievers this year on the hill. Wozniak has a 1.28 ERA in 49.1 IP. Conrad has struck out 42 batters, while giving up just seven earned runs. Rookie Matt Chanin (Olney, Md./Sherwood) has been equally as impressive, hurling a 2.45 ERA over eight appearances, going 3-1 in those games.

Scouting the Patriots (18-22-1, 7-8 A-10):

Navy is 18-22-1 on the year, and come into the game on Tuesday having two of their last three games. They most recently took the series against George Washington this weekend.

The Patriots are led offensively by Luke Willis and Brandon Gum. Willis leads the squad with a .371 batting average, having played and started in every game this year. Luke is also the team leader in slugging percentage with a .526 average. Gum is second on the team with a .359 average and is second in RBI with 28.

Jake Kalish leads the staff with 56 strike outs in 64.0 innings pitched. His 3.23 ERA and four wins are near the top on the team. Tyler Zombro and John Williams lead the team with five wins each in 60.1 and 65.2 innings of work each.

All-Time Series:

George Mason leads the all-time series 43-14 in 57 all-time matchups. The two sides have not met since 2013, when UMBC won 11-10 at Alumni Field.  

Scouting the Hawks (15-27, 13-8 MEAC):

UMES comes into the contest at 15-27 on the year, and are coming off a series win against Norfolk State this past weekend.  The Hawks have an 8-7 record at the Eastern Shore this year.  

Mike Escanilla leads the team with a .380 average and team high 49 hits. Justin Dattilo is right behind Escanilla with a .299 batting average. Dattilo is second on the team with 20 RBI and leads the Hawks with nine doubles.

Jesse Stinnett is the ace of the pitching staff, hurling a 2.74 ERA in 11 starts. Stinnett is 5-5 over those starts, throwing 75.2 innings with 64 strike outs.

All-Time Series:

The Retrievers hold a stout 11-0 lead in the all-time series. UMBC has won every matchup since the two started playing in 1979.

Up Next:

The Retrievers will head to Binghamton for a key America East series on Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3. The Retrievers and Bearcats will play a double header on Saturday at noon, and a single game Sunday at noon. UMBC swept Binghamton at Alumni Field back in March.
