Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball defeated the Black Bears, 6-3 on Sunday behind the bat of Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville). Lachance blasted a two-run home run to give UMBC the win.
The Retrievers (20-16, 7-8 AE) fell behind early, as Maine (15-22, 5-9 AE) got a home run in the fifth to take an early 1-0 lead. UMBC responded in their half of the fifth, scoring on a Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) double scoring Lachance. Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) followed up with a single to score Corbi. Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) completed the rally with a single of his own, scoring Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) to take a 3-1 lead into the sixth.
Luke Morrill blasted a solo home run to right field to cut the deficit to 3-2, before Jack Osbourne scored on a wild pitch that gave the Black Bears the tying run.
UMBC never wavered, as Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) smacked the go-ahead RBI triple in the bottom of the eighth to score Casali, making it 4-3 Retrievers. Lachance followed that up with a two run home run to left field to seal the victory.
Lachance led the attack, going 3-5 from the plate with two runs scored and two RBI. Corbi added an RBI and a run scored in the win.
The Retrievers will return to action on Tuesday, April 28 against George Mason. First pitch with the Colonials is slated for 3:00 p.m. in Fairfax, Va.
