UMBC and Maine Clash in Key America East Series This Weekend

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball will host the Maine Black Bears in a three game America East series at Alumni Field this weekend. The Retrievers come in at 18-15, 5-7 AE on the year, and are winners of their last two. UMBC knocked off Navy 9-1 and Coppin State 9-6 in mid-week action this week to remain a perfect 11-0 at home this year.

Scouting the Retrievers (18-15, 5-7 AE):

UMBC sits at 18-15, 5-7 AE on the year, and are coming off wins against Navy (9-1) and Coppin State (9-6) this past Tuesday and Wednesday. The Retrievers remained a perfect 11-0 at home, after the victory against the Eagles.

Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) has been a force in the batters box, hitting .339 in 32 games this year. Naumann is first on the team with 40 hits and has 22 RBI. Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) is hitting just under .300 at  .295 (36-122) on the year. He has played and started in every game for the Retrievers this season, smacking eight doubles and 19 RBI.

Freshman Matt Chanin (Olney, Md./Sherwood) and junior Conrad Wozniak (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods/Frank Phillip) are leading the pitching staff, with a 2.55 and 1.28 ERA each. Chanin is sitting at 3-1 on the year in six starts. He has 28 strikeouts in 35.1 innings of work. Wozniak has been equally impressive with a 1.28 ERA sitting down 35 batters and giving up just six earned runs all year.

Scouting the Black Bears (14-20, 4-7 AE):

Maine is 14-20 on the year, having won their most recent series with Hartford last weekend. The Black Bears have America East victories against Hartford (2), Albany (1), and UMass Lowell (1).

Sam Balzano and Luke Morrill lead the charge offensively, hitting .354 and .348 respectively. Balzano leads the team in runs scored (27) and hits (51). Morrill is second on the team with 39 hits and is slugging a stout .438 on the year.

The Black Bears as a team have an ERA of 4.96. The three starters in the series (Scott Heath, Justin Courtney, and Jacob Gosselin-Deschesnes) have ERA's of 4.39, 3.53, and 2.65 respectively. Heath is second on the staff with 34 strike outs.

The Retrievers and Black Bears have met 46 times before this weekend, with Maine holding a firm 39-7 lead in the series. UMBC split the six matchups last season, winning the home series with a 7-6 walk-off win in March.

There will be a representative collecting donations and equipment at the field. All donations will be donated to youth teams in Nicaragua.
