UMBC Baseball Travels to Navy; Hosts Coppin State in Mid-Week Action

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC has a pair of mid-week contests this week, traveling to Navy on Tuesday before hosting Coppin State on Wednesday. The Retrievers are 16-15, 5-7 AE after losing two of three against UMass Lowell this past weekend.

Scouting the Retrievers (16-15, 5-7 AE):

UMBC went 2-4 this past week, grabbing wins against Mount St. Mary's (20-5) and UMass Lowell (6-2). The Retrievers are now 16-15, 5-7 AE heading into the mid-week matchups.   

Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) leads the squad hitting .330 on the year, going 36-109 from the dish. Naumann has smacked a one home run, while driving in 19 and swiping six bases. Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) is the only other Retriever hitting over .300, hitting a staunch .304 on the year. Dolshun has scored 17 runs, driving in 18 with eighth doubles on the season.

Conrad Wozniak (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods/Frank Phillip) has been stellar for the Retrievers this year on the hill. Wozniak has a 1.28 ERA in 42.1 IP. Conrad has struck out 35 batters, while walking just nine. Rookie Matt Chanin (Olney, Md./Sherwood) has been equally as impressive, hurling a 2.55 ERA over seven appearances, going 3-1 in those games.

Scouting the Midshipmen (29-15, 10-6 Patriot):

Navy is 29-15 on the year, and come into the game on Tuesday having won five of their last seven. The Midshipmen are 19-5 in Annapolis on the year.

The Midshipmen are led offensively by Sean Trent and Robert Currie. Trent leads the team in batting average (.418), hits (74), doubles (16) and RBI (35). Currie is just behind Trent with a .337 batting average, and is second on the team with 56 hits and 32 RBI.

Jett Meenach and Luke Gillingham led the pitching staff with sub 1.00 ERA's. Meenach is hurling a 0.95 ERA in 38.0 innings of work. Gillingham has pitched 73.2 innings this year, striking out 103 batters. He has a 7-1 record in ten starts.

All-Time Series:

UMBC leads the all-time series, 22-19, including a 2-0 win earlier this year. The Retriever pitching staff got 16 strikeouts in the contest, including a season high nine by starter Connor Staskey (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem/Temple).

Scouting the Eagles (3-29-2, 2-16 MEAC):

Coppin State comes into the contest at 3-29-2 on the year, and has lost five of their last six dating back to April 12. The Eagles have yet to win a game on the road, going 0-17-2 in 19 road contests.

George Dragon leads the team on offense with a .319 batting average. Dragon leads the team with 38 hits, and is second on the squad with 16 RBI. John Kraft is the team's heavy hitter, smacking a team high three home runs, and leads the team with 18 RBI.

Anderson Burgess has the most wins on the pitching staff, going 2-4 in ten appearances with four starts. Burgess has a 6.69 ERA in 39.0 innings pitched.

All-Time Series:

The Retrievers hold a stout 43-1 lead in the all-time series. The lone UMBC loss came back in 2004, when the Eagles won 6-3 in extra innings at Alumni Field.
