Lowell, Mass.—The Retrievers fell in the series finale against UMass Lowell, 10-5 on Sunday. The Retrievers climbed back into the game of a Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) home run, but the River Hawks scored the next five runs to gain the victory. UMBC falls to 16-15, 5-7 AE on the year with the loss.
UMBC would jump ahead on a Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) RBI groundout in the first. Corbi's groundout would score Lachance to give UMBC a 1-0 lead.
The River Hawks would answer getting three in their half of the first, off a two RBI single and a hit by pitch. However the Retrievers would answer back in the fourth and fifth innings. Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) singled in Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) to cut it to 3-2, before a Lachance home run to left tied the game at 3-3.
UMass Lowell however scored five runs in their half of the fifth inning to take an 8-3 lead, a lead in which they never squandered.
The Retrievers would try to cut into the deficit, getting a run off a Naumann double, but UML would score a pair over the next two innings to take a 10-4 lead, and ultimately win 10-5.
Lachance and Naumann led the way grabbing three hits apiece. Lachance scored three times, driving in one run, while Naumann drove home two of the five UMBC runs.
UMBC returns to the diamond on Tuesday, April 21 against Navy. First pitch with the Midshipmen is set for 3:00 p.m. in Annapolis. UMBC defeated Navy, 2-0 earlier this year.
