UMBC Baseball Entertains Mount St. Mary’s In Mid-Week Action

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball will look to complete the season sweep of the Mountaineers at Alumni Field on Wednesday. The Retrievers come in at 14-13, 4-5 AE after getting swept by Stony Brook this past weekend.

Scouting the Retrievers (14-13, 4-5 AE):

UMBC is coming off a three game sweep at the hands of league leader Stony Brook this weekend. The Retrievers were outscored 20-5 over the three games.  

Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) leads the squad hitting .319 on the year, going 30-94 from the dish. Naumann has smacked a one home run, while driving in 16 and swiping six bases. Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) and Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) are the only other Retrievers hitting over .300, hitting .307 and .300 respectively.

Conrad Wozniak (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods/Frank Phillip) has been stellar for the Retrievers this year on the hill. Wozniak has a 1.49 ERA in 36.1 IP. Conrad has struck out 32 batters, while walking just nine. Rookie Matt Chanin (Olney, Md./Sherwood) has been equally as impressive, hurling a 2.60 ERA over six appearances, going 3-1 in those games.

Scouting the Mountaineers (6-19, 4-4 NEC):

Mount St. Mary's sits at 6-19 on the year, and come into the game with UMBC having their last two games against LIU Brooklyn. The Mountaineers are just 2-5 on the road this year, having played 12 neutral site games in 2015.

The Mountaineers have a pair of hitters leading the team, in Andrew Clow and Kory Britton. Clow is hitting .391 with nine doubles and 14 RBI, while leading the team with 36 hits. Britton is hitting .364 with one home run, and a team high 16 RBI.

Chad Diehl leads the pitching staff with a 2-3 record, sporting a 2.83 ERA. Projected starter Scott Nickerson has a 0-2 record with a 9.33 ERA in five appearances, four of which were starts. He struck out 14 batters, while walking 14 in 18.1 innings of work.

All-Time Series:

The Retriever and Mountaineers have met 87 times before, with UMBC holding a staunch 65-21-1 lead all-time. UMBC has won the last six dating back to 2011, and have not lost at home to the Mountaineers since 1998. The Retrievers won a come-from-behind extra inning contest back on March 24 in Emmitsburg, 4-3.

UMBC will travel up to Massachusetts for a three game set with UMass Lowell on April 18-19. The Retrievers and River Hawks will play a double header on Saturday at noon, and a single game Sunday at noon. All three games will be played at LeLacheur Park, home of the Lowell Spinners.
