Baltimore, Md.-- The UMBC baseball team picked up a big 10-5 win against George Washington on Tuesday at Alumni Field. The win moves the Retrievers to 14-10 on the year, and a perfect 9-0 at home.
George Washington (17-10) got on the board first, with a Brandon Chapman double to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead in the first. The Retrievers would answer, getting a run in their half of the first off an Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) sacrifice fly to score Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville).
Jake Barnes (Annandale, Va./Annandale) would give the Retrievers a 3-1 lead after his two run home run to left center in the second. After that, the UMBC bats would go quiet.
The Colonials would score the next four runs to take a 5-4 lead in after four innings of play.
UMBC broke through in the seventh, after George Washington loaded the bases on three hit by pitches. Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) singled up the middle to tie the game. Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) followed up Corbi with a single to plate Corbi, Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) and Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) to make it 8-5. Casali got his second and third RBI's of the game with a single of his own to make it 10-5 UMBC.
Denis Mikush (Burke, Va./Robinson) would shut the door in 2.1 innings of work to earn the win. Mikush gave up no hits, striking out one.
The Retrievers will return to the diamond this weekend, with a three game set against Stony Brook. The Retrievers and Seawolves will play two on Saturday starting at noon, with the series finale at noon on Sunday from Joe Nathan Field.
