Baltimore, Md.—The UMBC baseball team picked up their eleventh win of the year with an 11-6 win against Saint Peter's on Friday. The Retrievers mustered 13 hits in the win.
Sophomore Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) got the Retrievers on the board first with a single that scored Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) to take an early lead in the first.
The Peacocks (2-16-1) threatened in their half of the second, but a diving stop by Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) helped start an inning ending double play. The defense was solid all night behind starter Joe Vanderplas (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax/Tennessee). Jake Barnes (Annandale, Va./Annandale) and Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) each threw out runners at the plate in consecutive innings.
The score would remain 1-0 into the sixth, until Dolshun broke through again with a double to score Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) to make it 2-0. He would later score on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
The Retrievers would extend the lead to 11-0 heading into the final stanza, before the Peacock bats would wake up. Nick Henriquez started the inning with a solo shot to left center to break up the shut out. From there, Saint Peter's would rattle off five straight runs to make it 11-6, before the Retrievers would eventually close out the game.
Vanderplas went seven complete innings, giving up just six hits, and walking three batters to earn the win. Dolshun was a perfect 4-4 on the afternoon, driving in three runs, and scoring three runs himself.
The Retrievers and Peacocks are back at it with a double header starting at 11:00 a.m. at Alumni Field.
