Retrievers Host Saint Peter’s For Three Game Set This Weekend

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball will host the Peacocks in a three game series this Friday and Saturday at Alumni Field. The Retrievers are 10-10 on the year, having dropped their most recent matchup with George Washington.

Game 1- UMBC- Joe Vanderplas (1-3, 5.86 ERA) vs. SPU- Mike Doran (0-3, 9.98 ERA)

Game 2- UMBC- Conrad Wozniak (1-0, 1.12 ERA) vs. SPU- Kevin Soriano (0-2, 6.60 ERA)

Game 3- UMBC- Matt Chanin (2-0, 1.00 ERA) vs. SPU- John Leiter (0-3, 6.53 ERA)

Scouting the Retrievers (10-10, 4-2 AE):

UMBC sits at 10-10, 4-2 AE on the year, having won six of their last seven games. The lone blemish came in their last game against George Washington on Tuesday. The Retrievers fell behind 5-1 before cutting it to 5-4 after six innings. However, the Colonials got a run in the seventh to win 6-4.  

Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) leads the squad with a .333 batting average. Casali has started every game for UMBC, hitting one home run, with 11 RBI's and stealing four bases. Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) has been equally as impressive, hitting .324 on the year, going 212-68 from the dish. Naumann has smacked a two home runs, while driving in 13 and swiping five bases.

Freshman Matt Chanin (Olney, Md./Sherwood) and junior Conrad Wozniak (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods/Frank Phillip) are leading the pitching staff, with a 1.00 and 1.12 ERA each. Chanin is sitting at 2-0 on the year in three starts. He has 19 strikeouts with only five walks this season. Wozniak has been equally impressive with a 1.12 ERA sitting down 17 batters and giving up just three earned runs all year.

Scouting the Peacocks (2-15-1, 2-4 MAAC):

Saint Peter's is 2-15-1 on the year, having tied NJIT and losing to Penn earlier this week. The Peacocks have both their wins in MAAC play with wins against Quinnipiac and Niagara.

Zach Rawson and Jose Martinez led the team offensively, hitting .256 and .235 respectively. Rawson three RBI's on 11 hits this year, swiping one base. Martinez has eight hits on the year. Rob Moore is second on the team with 13 hits, as Saint Peter's is hitting .195 as a team on the year.

The Peacocks will throw Mike Doran, Kevin Soriano and John Leiter against UMBC. Doran is 0-3 with a 9.98 ERA in 15.1 innings, while Soriano is 0-2 with a 6.60 ERA in 15 innings of work. Leiter has the best ERA of the three, hurling a 6.53 ERA in 20.2 innings pitched.

All-Time Series:

The Retriever and Peacocks have never met in either program's history. The Retrievers are 32-39 all-time against MAAC competitors, including winning records against Iona (2-1), Marist (3-1), and Quinnipiac (8-4).

The Retrievers will host George Washington on Tuesday, April 7 at 6:00 p.m. at Alumni Field. UMBC will then head to Stony Brook for America East action on Saturday and Sunday.
