Boston, Mass.—UMBC redshirt junior Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) and freshman Matt Chanin (Olney, Md./Sherwood) earned Co-Player and Rookie of the Week respectively. The duo were honored following their strong performances this week, where the Retrievers went 5-0 to move to 10-9, 4-2 AE on the year.
Gatto was solid for the Retrievers, hitting .333 (6-18) and driving in six runs. All six of the runs were batted in during the first ever sweep of Binghamton in UMBC history this past weekend. Anthony started the series in grand fashion, smacking the walk-off home run in the bottom of the 13th inning in a 10-9 comeback win on Saturday. He followed that up with the game winning three RBI triple on Sunday. Gatto has three home runs on the year, good for second in the conference.
Chanin had another masterful start for the Retrievers in the series finale on Sunday. Chanin threw five shutout innings in the series finale with Binghamton, to help complete the sweep. Matt gave up four hits with three strikeouts to earn his second win of the year. He threw three innings against Mount St. Mary's, striking out four to help UMBC earn a 4-3 victory.
The Retrievers are back in action today, March 31 with a single game against George Washington at 3:00 p.m. UMBC returns back to Alumni Field on Friday and Saturday, April 3-4 with a three game set against Saint Peter's. The single game will be play Friday at 6:00 p.m., with a double-header on Saturday starting at 11:00 a.m.
