Red Hot UMBC Baseball Takes Six Game Win Streak to George Washington on Tuesday

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball looks to extend their six game win streak, as they travel to George Washington on Tuesday for mid-week action. The Retrievers have won six of their last seven, including going 5-0 this past week. UMBC is 10-9, 4-2 AE on the year.

Scouting the Retrievers (10-9, 4-2 AE):

UMBC is currently riding a six game winning streak that dates back to the March 21 game against the Citadel. The Retrievers went 5-0 this past week with wins over Mount St. Mary's, Navy, and a three game sweep of Binghamton.

Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) leads the squad hitting .339 on the year, going 21-62 from the dish. Naumann has smacked a one home run, while driving in nine and swiping five bases. Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) had a huge week, going 6-18 (.333) over five games, including the walk-off home run in a 10-9 comeback win against Binghamton.  

Freshman Matt Chanin (Olney, Md./Sherwood) and junior Conrad Wozniak (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods/Frank Phillip) are leading the pitching staff, with a 1.00 and 1.12 ERA each. Chanin is sitting at 2-0 on the year in three starts. He has 19 strikeouts with only five walks this season. Wozniak has been equally impressive with a 1.12 ERA sitting down 17 batters and giving up just three earned runs all year.

Scouting the Colonials (13-8, 4-1 A-10):

George Washington sits at 13-8 on the year, and are coming off a three game sweep of St. Bonaventure this weekend. The Colonials are 11-4 at home on the year, as opposed to 2-4 away from Arlington.

The Colonials have a pair of batters hitting over .300 this year. Joey Bartosic and Robbie Metz are hitting .357 and .310 respectively. Bartosic has belted three double and one triple while driving in 11 runs in 21 games. Metz is not far behind him, smacking four doubles, while scoring 13 runs himself.

In addition to his work at the plate, Metz is also the leader of the pitching staff, hurling a 0.52 ERA in five starts, going 2-0 in those starts. He has struck out 18 batters while only walking five. Tomorrow's projected starter Brady Renner has a 2.25 ERA in 12 innings of work. Renner has a 1-1 record in two starts.

All-Time Series:

The Retriever and Colonials have met 45 times before, with George Washington holding a 29-26 lead in the series. The two most recently met last season, where the Retrievers took an 8-2 victory in Arlington. UMBC has won the last two meetings in Arlington, giving up just three runs in those contests.

The Retrievers will host the Saint Peter's Peacocks on Friday and Saturday at Alumni Field. The Retrievers and Peacocks will play a single game on Friday at 6:00 p.m., with a double-header starting at 11:00 a.m.
