Baltimore, Md.—UMBC picked up a big 2-0 shutout victory against Navy on Wednesday. The win moves the Retrievers to 7-9 on the year.
Navy would strike first, loading the bases in the top of the first. However Connor Staskey (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem/Temple) would get a ground out to get out of the jam.
Then it was time for the Retrievers to threaten. Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) would get to second in the second inning, but UMBC would strand him out there. UMBC would get Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) in scoring position, but Navy would get the pick off to end the inning unscathed.
The Retrievers would get on the board in the fifth, thanks in part to a pair of Navy errors. Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va./TC Williams) would cross the plate following an error off a ball hit by Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee). Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) would connect on a single the very next at bat to make it 2-0 Retrievers.
The UMBC pitching staff would shut down the Navy offense all night, giving up just four hits to the Midshipmen.
Connor Staskey got the win to move to 2-2 on the year. Denis Mikush (Burke, Va./Robinson) recorded his second save of the year.
The Retrievers are back in action on Saturday and Sunday against Binghamton. The game on Saturday will start at 4:30 p.m., with a double-header on Sunday starting at noon. All games will be played at Alumni Field.
