Charleston, S.C.—The UMBC baseball saw their two game win streak come to an end at the hands of the Citadel on Friday, 13-6. The Retrievers got down early and never recovered as they fall to 4-8 on the year.
The Bulldogs (13-7) struck early and often through the first three innings, as they put up five runs through the first two innings. The very next frame is when the Citadel broke through on UMBC starter Kevin Little (Weldon, Calif./Kern Valley/Taft College). The Bulldogs scored seven runs in the third inning to safely put the game out of reach.
The Retrievers would not go quietly however. Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) would break through smacking a solo home run to left center to cut the deficit to 12-1. Following a Bulldog run in the seventh, UMBC would again strike with a pair of runs.
Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) would ground into a double play, that plated Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan). Just a batter later, Connor Hax (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara) would plate Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va./TC Williams) to make the Retrievers deficit 13-3. Casali would bring home Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) and Tim Kelly (Hampton, Va./York/Virginia Tech) on a triple to left. He would later score on a wild pitch just a batter later.
That would be all the Retrievers could muster in the game, as they fell 13-6 to the Citadel on Friday. Casali led UMBC on offense going 3-5 from the dish with a triple and two RBI's. Gatto went 2-2 including the solo shot.
UMBC and the Citadel close out the series with a double header tomorrow, March 21. The double dip begins at 2:00 p.m.
