Mrytle Beach, S.C.-- The UMBC baseball team fell 5-0 to Michigan State on Saturday. The Retrievers only mustered three hits on the day, as the Spartans took control with a four run second inning. The loss drops UMBC to 1-4 on the year.
Michigan State jumped on UMBC with a four run second inning. A pair of singles to lead off the inning gave the Spartans the jolt they needed, as another single gave Sparty a 1-0 lead. The Spartans would get three more runs, one off a wild pitch, to take a 4-0 advantage after two.
Jake Barnes (Annandale, Va./Annandale) got the first hit for the Retrievers in the third with a double down the left field line, but the inning would stall. Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) and Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) would register the only other hits for UMBC on the day.
Michigan State would get another run in the bottom of the eighth to seal the 5-0 win.
Connor Staskey (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem/Temple) got the start for the Retrievers, going 1.2 giving up six hits and four earned. Cory Callahan (Sykesville, Md./Good Counsel) and Shane Vlasic (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) came on in relief only surrendering four more hits the rest of the way.
The Retrievers will close the Coastal Carolina Invitational tomorrow against Toledo. The game with the Rockets is slated for a 2:30 p.m. start.
