UMBC Falls 8-1 to Michigan to Open Coastal Carolina Invitational

Myrtle Beach, S.C.—UMBC baseball jumped ahead against the Wolverines, but Michigan answered with eight straight runs to win 8-1. The Retrievers were led by Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) who went 2-3 on the day with two singles.

The Retrievers got on the board in the top of the first inning. Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) got things started with a single, followed by an Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) walk. Senior Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) hit a single through the right side to plate Corbi, giving UMBC an early 1-0 lead.

Michigan would answer back with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning to tie it up at one. Both teams would go scoreless through the third, before the Wolverines opened things up, scoring five runs in the fourth, capped off by a Jacob Cronenworth three run home run.

UMBC would muster just one more hit the rest of the way, as Michigan added another run in the seventh to wraps things up.

Naumann paced the Retriever offense, going 2-3 from the plate with two singles. Corbi, Gatto and Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) had the other hits for UMBC. Lefty Joe Vanderplas (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax/Tennessee) went five full innings, giving up seven runs, striking out three. Rookie Matt Chanin (Olney, Md./Sherwood) went three innings in relief giving up just three hits and one run.

UMBC is back in action tomorrow, Saturday March 7 against Michigan State. First pitch with the Spartans is slated for 3:00 p.m.
