Goose Creek, S.C.—UMBC fell 7-5 against Lafayette on Saturday. The Retrievers fell behind 7-2 early, but could not complete the comeback as they fall to 1-2 on the year.
UMBC got off to a hot start, thanks to a two run first inning. Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) led off the inning with a single to right. A few batters later, Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) smacked a two-bagger down the line to plate Lachance. Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) followed that up with a single through the left side to bring in Casali to give UMBC an early 2-0 lead.
Lafayette would respond the next half inning, getting a three-run blast from Steven Cohen to take the lead 3-2. Following a Retriever error, the Leopards would get another two runs in the top half of the third to extend the lead to 5-2.
Lafayette would get two more runs after a throwing error to take 7-2 lead after the top of the sixth. That same inning, UMBC would get a couple of hits, but could not cash in, as Lafayette took a 7-2 lead into the seventh.
The Retrievers break through on Lachance single to score Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) who led off the inning with a walk. UMBC got ever closer with a pair of runs in the eighth, cutting the deficit to 7-5 heading into the final frame, but could not complete the comeback falling 7-5.
Dolshun led the way, going 3-4 with a run and an RBI.
UMBC will close out the weekend against Richmond from Dennis Field at the Charleston Baseball Academy tomorrow. First pitch with the Spiders is slated for 1:30 p.m.
