ROCKVILLE, Md. – UMBC rising sophomore pitchers Denis Mikush(Burke, Va./Robinson) and Joe Vanderplas (Fairax, Va./Fairfax) have been named to the 2013 Cal Ripken League All-Star Game, the collegiate summer league office announced on Wednesday night. Both pitchers, who are playing for the Vienna Riverdogs, will represent the South Division at the All-Star Game.
So far this summer, the two Retriever hurlers have combined to work 42 innings over 12 appearances for Vienna, posting a paltry 1.71 ERA. The Riverdogs, however, have a 10-14 record at the midway point and sit in ninth-place in the 12-team league.

He currently leads the starting rotation in ERA (2.17) and innings pitched (29) and has one complete game to his name. In addition, Vanderplas has posted a miniscule 0.69 WHIP while fanning 21 batters and walking only three.
Coming out of the bullpen, Mikush has been a lockdown reliever for the Riverdogs, limiting opponents to a .089 batting average. In eight appearances out of the pen, the right-hander is 2-0 while converting both of his save opportunities. Over 13 innings of work, Mikush has struck out 22 batters while issuing just six free passes and allowing one earned run on four hits.
