BALTIMORE – 13 UMBC baseball players will play locally this summer in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League, with two others playing in Maine and New York. Four Retrievers will represent the Herndon (Va.) Braves, while three each will ply their trade for the Rockville Express, Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts, and Vienna River Dogs.
The Cal Ripken League is a 12-team wooden bat summer league based in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. metro areas. The season runs from mid-June through late July.
In addition, rising sophomore pitcher Mike Gomez (Nutley, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) will throw for the Sanford (Maine) Mainers of the New England Collegiate Baseball League and classmate Riley Stephenson (Frederick, Md./Boonsboro) heads to New York to pitch for the Glens Falls Golden Eagles in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League.
The 2013 Retrievers made an eight-win improvement from 2012, posting an 18-30 overall record with a 9-21 mark in America East Play. Shortstop Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper after pacing the team in batting average, doubles, and RBI. Meanwhile, reliever Jon Cohn (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep) received a spot on the All-Conference First Team after leading a resurgent UMBC pitching staff which dropped over four runs off of its ERA (4.78) from 2012 (9.01).
