BALTIMORE – UMBC junior pitcher Mac Gill (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) of the baseball team was named the UMBC Athlete of the Month for March 2013, in a poll conducted from Apr. 1-8. Gill won the vote over men's lacrosse's Ethan Murphy (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca East), track and field's Vincent Rentzsch (Orianenberg, Germany) and Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown), tennis' Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md./National Connections Academy) and Josefin Stange-Jonsson (Vasteras, Sweden/De La Gardiegymnasiet), women's lacrosse's Alyssa Semones (Westminster, Md./Westminster/Penn State), and softball's Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby).
During the month of March, Gill became the ace for the Retriever staff, going 2-0 and posting a 2.70 earned-run-average in five starts. The junior right-hander worked a team-high 33.1 innings and threw his first career complete game on Mar. 23, defeating America East rival Albany, 3-2.
For the year, Gill leads the starting staff with a 3.79 ERA over the course of 35.2 innings in six starts. He is limiting opposing batters with a .287 batting average and has notched 11 strikeouts.
