CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The UMBC baseball team was picked to finish sixth in the America East in 2013 in a vote by the league head coaches, the conference office announced on Wednesday afternoon.  2012 league champion and College World Series participant Stony Brook received four first places votes for the second straight year, and 23 points overall, to lead the preseason poll.

The Seawolves, winners of both the regular-season and tournament titles a year ago, led a tightly packed upper-tier. Maine (19) and Binghamton (18) each received one first place vote to take second and third, respectively.   Albany (13), Hartford (12), and UMBC (5) rounded out the preseason poll in order.

UMBC welcomes 16 newcomers to campus this season after going 10-42 overall and 2-22 in conference play during head coach Bob Mumma's first season at his alma mater in 2012.  Captains Jason Allinder (Snow Hill, Md./Snow Hill/Chesapeake CC) and Rob McCabe (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep), as well as sophomoreAnthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West), an All-Rookie selection a year ago, look to lead the offense for the Retrievers.  Meanwhile, staff veterans Shane Vlasic (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) and Mac Gill (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) return to the hill for UMBC.

In addition to taking on Stony Brook during the year, the Retrievers open the season against another team which reached the NCAA tournament in 2012, Baseball America Preseason No. 8-ranked N.C. State.  UMBC will take on the Wolfpack on Friday, Mar. 1 at the Caravelle Resort's Baseball at the Beach Tournament hosted by Coastal Carolina in Myrtle Beach, S.C.  In addition to the facing the Wolfpack, UMBC will square off against West Virginia and Indiana while in South Carolina.
