Junior Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) hit a two-run double in the sixth inning that scored freshman Kevin Kean (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) and junior Michael Pesci(Parsippany, N.J./DePaul Catholic). Redshirt freshman D.J. Ream (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield) doubled to score Himmelstein and give the Retrievers a 4-2 lead.
In the eighth inning and a 4-4 game, UMBC loaded the bases before Kean drew a bases-loaded walk that scored senior Rick Phillips (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg). Senior Casey Medairy (Elkridge, Md./Howard) later scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Brian Klukowicz (Clifton, N.J./St. Peter's Prep).
Mount St. Mary's starter Marshall Thomason allowed three earned runs in 4.2 innings of work. Karl Lamont (3-3) earned the win after getting the last two outs in the eighth, while Andrew Schrock pitched a scoreless inning for his first save.
UMBC senior starter Austin Drewyer (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) struck out four in seven innings of work, allowing just three earned runs. Sophomore Mike Mitchell (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic/Frederick CC) took the loss after allowing the winning run in the eighth.
The Retrievers return to action Wednesday when they play at Towson at 3:00 p.m.
