BALTIMORE--The UMBC baseball team dropped its fourth straight game and the third of the series as it fell, 5-4, to Longwood on Sunday afternoon at The Baseball Factory Field at UMBC.
Senior Mark Lemon (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) led the Retrievers (6-13) in the loss, going 2-for-4 on the day with a double, two runs scored, and one RBI, while sophomore Ed Bach (2-2) (Columbia, Md./Atholton) was tabbed with the loss after going 6.1 innings and giving up five runs on 11 hits while striking out one.
Phil Cerreto led the Lancers (17-10) as he went 3-for-4 on the day with a double, one run scored, and two RBI, while John Farrell earned the win giving up just two runs on six hits and striking out four in five innings and Rob Moody picked up his second save of the year after giving up just one run over three innings in relief.
The Lancers built a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth, but the Retrievers cut that lead in half thanks to a two-RBI double by senior Joe Fowler (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) to make the score 4-2.
Longwood added one more run in the top of the seventh, but UMBC quickly countered in the bottom of the inning with a groundout RBI by senior Will Delawter (Frederick, Md./Catoctin/Chesapeake JC) to make the score 5-3.
The Retrievers added another run in the eighth off an RBI single and had two runners in scoring position and one out when junior Wink Nolan (Ellicott City, Md./Calvert Hall/Maryland) grounded into a double play to end the inning with UMBC within one, 5-4.
Both teams were held scoreless and hitless in the ninth as the Lancers edged out the Retrievers for the 5-4 win.
The Retrievers travel to Washington, D.C. on Tuesday for a 3:00 p.m. contest against Georgetown before hosting Vermont in their America East conference-opening series beginning with a 4:00 p.m. game on Friday.
