Peddicord Homers Twice as UMBC Baseball Trounces GW, 14-4

ARLINGTON, Va.--Junior Scott Peddicord (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) homered twice and batted in five runs as the UMBC baseball team trounced George Washington, 14-4, on Tuesday at Barcroft Park.

The Retrievers snapped a four-game losing skid to improve to 7-13, while the Colonials (14-11) suffered only their second loss in the last seven games.

Peddicord led UMBC as he went 3-for-6 on the day with three runs scored, five batted in, and the only two homers of the game, while freshman Sterling Sams (1-0) (Vienna, Va./James Madison) earned the win after pitching one scoreless and hitless inning in relief while striking out one.  Freshman Travis Pearson (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) and redshirt freshman Austin Drewyer (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) combined for five hitless and scoreless innings in relief with Pearson striking out one in three innings, and Drewyer fanning two in two innings pitched.

Will Cooper led GW as he went 1-for-3 on the day with one run scored, one batted in, and a sacrifice bunt, while Ryan LaPointe (2-2) suffered the loss after giving up nine runs on 11 hits and walking two in 5.1 innings pitched.

The Colonials held a 4-0 lead over the Retrievers going into the fourth, but would be held hitless for the remainder of the contest, as the Retrievers gradually chipped away at the lead.

Senior Joe Fowler (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) got things started in the top of the third with a one-out single and senior Will Delawter (Frederick, Md./Catoctin/Chesapeake JC) followed with a single of his own before junior Tom Meaney (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem) loaded the bases with a walk to bring up junior Shawn Retz (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech/Catonsville C.C.).

Retz reached base on a fielder's choice, which caught Meaney at second base, but scored Fowler as the Retrievers looked at a two-out situation with two runners on base.  Before the Colonials could get out of the inning however, senior Mark Lemon (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) was hit by pitch and freshman Rich Conlon (Vienna, Va./James Madison) walked to earn the second RBI of the inning and cut the Colonial lead in half, 4-2.

That lead wouldn't last long as Sams faced just four batters in the bottom of the inning and the Retrievers added four runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead for good thanks to an RBI single by Fowler, RBI's by Meaney and Retz on fielders' choices, and an RBI single by Conlon which put them up 6-4.

Peddicord tallied his first homer of the afternoon with a two-run shot to right in the sixth and Lemon added another score for the Retrievers with a sacrifice fly as they extended their lead to five, 9-4.

Peddicord then reached base in the seventh on a fielding error which brought sophomore Dave Warrenfeltz (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) in to score to give UMBC a six-run lead and added his second homer of the day in the eighth with a two-out, three-run affair that gave the Retrievers the 13-4 lead.  Meaney tacked on the final run of the game with an RBI double to center for the 14-4 decision.

The Retrievers open conference play this weekend when they host Vermont for a four-game series beginning with a 4:00 p.m. contest on Friday.
