UMBC Baseball Falls, 11-2, as Towson Head Coach Claims 499th Win

TOWSON, Md.--The UMBC baseball team was out-hit, 17-9, as they fell to Towson, 11-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Schuerholz Park in Towson, Md.  The Tigers' (4-7) head coach, Mike Gottlieb came within one game of 500 wins as he picked up his 499th on Tuesday.
Senior Will Delawter (Frederick, Md./Catoctin/Chesapeake JC) and junior Tom Meaney (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem) recorded the only two extra-base hits and drove in the only two runs for the Retrievers (3-5) as Meaney started the game's scoring off in the top of the fourth with an RBI single that plated junior Brad Brainer (Chester, Md./Kent Island/Chesapeake JC).  Delawter added the Retrievers' only other run with a solo homer in the fifth, while Meaney tallied the only double for the Retrievers' with a lead-off two-bagger in the ninth.
Delawter was 2-for-4 on the day with a home run, one run scored and one RBI, while Meaney was 3-for-4 with a double and one RBI.
Freshman Dave Divita (1-1) (Mayfield Village, Ohio/Mayfield) was tabbed with the loss for the Retrievers as he gave up four runs on 11 hits, while fanning one in five innings of work.
Brian Conley led the Tigers as he went 3-for-5 on the day with one run scored, a double and three RBI and Austin Hurd (1-0) picked up his first win of the season after pitching five innings where he gave up just one run on four hits while striking out three.  Spencer Patton also earned a save for Towson after pitching four innings in relief and giving up just one run on five hits while striking out three.
Meaney started the scoring off for both teams in the fourth, but the Tigers quickly answered in the bottom of the inning and took the lead for good after a three-run inning in the fifth.  They added five more runs on four hits and a Retriever error in the sixth and a two-run homer by Kevin Collins in the seventh gave them an 11-2 decision over the Retrievers.
The Retrievers travel to Washington, D.C. on Wednesday as they face Georgetown at 3:00 p.m.
